My love of sewing began at the age of 15, taking Home Economics in High School. That following summer I turned 16 and I begged my mother, not for a car, but a sewing machine. My mother hesitated and kept saying, “No, you won’t use it and it will be a waste.” The day before my birthday she again said, “I need to get you something, now be serious.” Again, I asked for a sewing machine. She caved and purchased a cheap one at Kmart. I held onto and used that baby for 8 years until I had worn it out. I traded in for a much larger and more expensive model and as of today, I am on my 5th machine. My grandfather teased me for years because I didn’t want to quilt. Therefore, I was not a true lover of sewing. Well, I just didn’t see the point or purpose and never had an interest. I made clothes, wedding party dresses, and all sorts of craft items. I truly loved the art of sewing and had always wanted to make it my full-time job but never had the resources and support to do so.
In the year 2020, I was home a lot and made well over 1,000 masks and handed them out to nurses and friends. I didn’t charge, I just gave them away. I grew tired of that and still had fabric so, I began watching videos and my love of sewing turned into a bite by the quilting bug. I was hooked. I didn’t know what I was doing but I kept at it.
In the spring of 2021 while visiting my dealer to inquire about a frame to hook into my domestic machine that was built for quilters, I was talked into and ended up ordering the largest longarm they had! I received my longarm in October and began training weekly on how to use it and care for it. In January I felt confident enough to open up to customers, only being open a couple of days a week.
In February, after 31 years of nursing I quit and opened up Sew Believable full time. In the beginning, I didn’t feel the addition of fabric was feasible and did not want to even attempt it. After a few months of inquiries and suggestions from customers, I agreed this is an avenue of business we needed to explore.
The shop is located in downtown Wathena where my husband and I both grew up. He has been here since he was 9 years old, and I was here until I was in high school. We married in 2015 and I returned. This is our hometown, and we are very happy to be here and have local residents as customers and friends.
